11/14-11/15/11 Frog Dissection

WARNING: If you are currently viewing this post and you are an animal lover, or disagree with the dissection of creatures for educational reasons, please DO NOT continue to this post.

The frog dissection was by far the most exciting and interesting thing I have ever done in science. I was actually surprised, despite all the times I was told about it, by all the similarities between the humans' systems and the frogs' systems. It was interesting to see how other living organisms really are a lot like us. The frog digestive system had the same parts and functions of the human digestive system. Even the reproductive system had similarities.

Even though we didn't see everything, we identified the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, gallbladder, liver, spleen, fat bodies, reproductive organs, and we saw the bones when we reached the bottom. the bones resembled the human rib cage but were not exactly the same since they covered the organs instead of forming a cage around them. we also looked at the inside of the stomach after removing it and saw the muscles that mechanically digested the food, which slightly resembled the ligaments we saw in the chicken wing dissection. We also saw the inside of one of the broken bones, and saw the bone marrow that produces red blood cells. The heart was also interesting. After watching the video that showed how the heart worked with two valves and identified the 3 parts of the frogs heart, we discovered we had accidentally burst one when we removed it. The frog dissection was a fun and interesting experience, and i hope we do more labs like this in the future.
